The tympanic cavity makes up the majority of the middle |ear|. It is a tiny cavity hollowed out of the |temporal bone|. The cavity is lined with |mucous membrane| and contains three small bones: the malleus (hammer), the incus (anvil), and the stapes (stirrup). The tympnaic membrane (eardrum) separates the middle |ear| from the external |ear| (auditory) canal.
